Story + Manu/Script Consultation

Story consultant is industry-speak for what some people refer to as a “script doctor” or “story doctor,” and as the name implies, my main responsibility is to help fiction writers, nonfiction writers, screenwriters, and producers identify and fix problems with stories and then to communicate solutions to the writer. This is done on a video conference (or phone conference), and encompasses the entire manuscript or film script. On average, I meet with the client weekly, and decide in advance how much material we’ll cover. I charge flat fees for my services so you’re not stuck paying for “billable hours,” which can get well into the thousands for a full novel, memoir, or feature length screenplay. You’ll know what my fee is up front so there’s no guessing.

As a professionally published writer, editor, and  coach, I collaborate with bestselling authors, first-time authors, playwrights, nonfiction writers (memoirists & essayists), screenwriters, and other creative writing professionals to ensure that the work you submit and sell is in its best possible form to help ensure success.

“His clients’ successes have cemented Marcus’s reputation as the ‘book whisperer’ in industry circles.

Andrew Hall, Hallway Studios

My book manuscript and screenplay coverage includes a synopsis*, objective and constructive analysis to give you an idea of what’s working and what may need improvement, and real-time connections so that we can have a dialogue — an actual give-and-take — about your work.  It’s not my place to rewrite your story, but to help you identify themes, and voice, consistency, and other intricate moving parts of a professional writing project. You want to put your best foot forward, and engaging with someone of my skill and background is designed to help make you better.

research-contentI accept your book/manuscript in electronic format (PDF, Word, ePub, MOBI, etc.) or you may snail mail a printed book/manuscript. If you’d like the printed book back, please include a self-addressed envelope or packaging which includes pre-paid postage or Fedex/UPS/DHL account number.

I focus on professionalism, quality, and unbiased, constructive input from a well-kanequalified, award-winning writer, editor, and proofreader. You work one-on-one with me, not a stable of readers who are only interested in getting through as many scripts as they can, and quickly. I read thoroughly and intensively to provide you with the best constructive feedback and outstanding return for your money.

I have worked with some of the thoroughbreds in the industry:
